Our first two groups of Indigenous trainees from our Indigenous & Remote Service Delivery Traineeship Program (IRSDT) have finished their last face to face training days in recent weeks.

These participants in the Certificate III and IV in Business proudly finished up by presenting their assessment projects to the BCA National Management Team and the Department of Health and Ageing.
The BCA National Training Team were thrilled to see the confidence that the trainees had developed during the last few months, given students' initial fear and trepidation back in week one when they first learned they would be working towards presenting a project plan to the ‘big wigs’ in Canberra. As part of their assessment, trainees were encouraged to take responsibility for developing a project or plan they thought would work for their communities to improve the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The presentations wowed the audience with their professional approach, which included full budget estimates and project plans. Representatives from the Department were so impressed with some ideas that they agreed to stay in contact with the students to explore funding ideas.
This bitter sweet ending to the face to face training was an inspiration for our team to be a part of. It highlighted the importance of how learning is enhanced and promoted when people are able to relate the content back to what is important to them, in this case, community, elders and the importance of maintaining cultural connections.
BCA National are continuing with five more training groups scheduled to finish this year. Health and aged care services in remote communities can apply to be part of the program by downloading further information from the Department's website or contacting Jodie Kiermaier at the Department of Health and Ageing on 02 6289 3748 by May 4, 2011.
